How Local Businesses Show Up in AI Search

What is AI search, and where does it get its answers?

AI search covers tools that answer a question in sentences instead of a list of links: Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and others. When a homeowner asks one of them for a reliable roofer in their city, the tool pulls information from the web and from search indexes, writes an answer and often lists the sources it used.

That means your business shows up in two ways: it is named in the answer, or one of your pages is cited as a source. Both depend on the same thing. The system has to be able to reach your information, understand it and have reasons to trust it.

What does Google say about AI Overviews for a local business?

Google's Search Central documentation on AI features is direct. To be eligible as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet. Google says there are no additional requirements and no special optimizations needed, and no special schema.org structured data to add.

Google also says the usual SEO best practices still apply. Among them:

    • Allow crawling in robots.txt and in any CDN or hosting settings.
    • Make content easy to find through internal links.
    • Provide a good page experience.
    • Put important content in text, not only in images or video.
    • Make sure structured data matches the visible text on the page.
    • Keep your Business Profile information up to date.

    How to measure it

Google states that traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode is included in the Search Console Performance report, under the Web search type. It is not broken out separately, so watch overall trends and conversions in Google Analytics rather than expecting a dedicated AI report.

How do you get cited by ChatGPT?

OpenAI uses a crawler called OAI-SearchBot to surface websites in ChatGPT search. Its documentation says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as navigational links. GPTBot is a different crawler used for model training; blocking it is a separate choice.

Beyond access, there is no published ranking formula for ChatGPT citations. What we can do is make sure the content is reachable, clear and backed by other sources, which is the same work that supports every other search surface.

    • Check robots.txt and any firewall or bot protection for rules that block search crawlers you want.
    • Make sure your key pages render their main text in HTML, not only after heavy JavaScript.
    • Keep pages focused: one service, one clear answer, real details.

What does answer engine optimization for a local business look like?

Answer engine optimization, or AEO, means writing and structuring pages so a system can lift a clear, correct answer from them. For a service business, that is mostly good writing with a few habits.

    • Start each service page with a two or three sentence answer to the main question, such as what the service includes, who it is for and the area you cover.
    • Use headings phrased like real questions: How long does a roof replacement take? Do you offer financing?
    • Make each section understandable on its own, so it can be quoted without the rest of the page.
    • Use lists for steps, options and what is included.
    • Add a short FAQ with direct answers, based on questions customers actually ask your team.
    • State facts you can back up, such as service areas, licenses and years in business, and leave out claims you cannot.

    Why does entity consistency matter?

AI systems try to recognize your business as one entity across many sources: your website, your Google Business Profile, directories, social profiles, review sites and news mentions. When the name, address, phone number, services and service area match everywhere, it is easier to connect those mentions to the same business.

    • Use the exact same business name and phone number on your site, Business Profile and directories.
    • Describe your services and service area the same way in each place.
    • Keep an About page with who runs the business, where it operates and how to reach you.
    • Add LocalBusiness or a more specific type of structured data that matches what the page shows. It helps machines read your details, though Google says it is not required for AI features.

Do reviews and third-party mentions affect AI answers?

When someone asks an AI tool for the best or most reliable provider, the answer often reflects what other sites say about businesses, not only what businesses say about themselves. Reviews, local news, industry associations, supplier pages and community sites are all places where your business can be described by someone else.

We cannot say how much weight any one AI system gives to those sources, because they do not publish it. But earning genuine reviews and real local mentions is useful on its own: it helps your Google Maps prominence and it is what a homeowner checks before calling.

How to show up in AI search: what to avoid

    • Paying for services that promise placement in ChatGPT or AI Overviews. No one controls that.
    • Publishing large amounts of thin, auto-generated pages for every city and keyword. Google warns against content made mainly for search engines.
    • Hiding key facts in images or PDFs only.
    • Adding structured data that does not match the visible page.
    • Blocking crawlers by accident with a security plugin or bot filter.

    Frequently asked questions

Can you guarantee my business will appear in ChatGPT or AI Overviews?

No. Nobody can guarantee placement in AI answers. Google says eligibility and serving are not guaranteed even for pages that meet its requirements, and other AI tools do not publish how they choose sources. What we can do is remove barriers and make your information clear and consistent.

Do I need special schema markup for AI search?

Google says there is no special structured data required for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Standard structured data such as LocalBusiness can still help machines read your details, as long as it matches what the page shows.

    Is AEO different from SEO?

It builds on SEO. Crawlable pages, useful content and a strong local presence are the base for both. AEO adds a focus on clear, quotable answers and question-based structure.

How do I know if AI search sends me traffic?

Google includes AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic in the Search Console Performance report under Web. Other tools may show up as referrals in Google Analytics. Track leads by source to see what actually turns into business.

    Should I block AI crawlers?

That is a business decision. Blocking a search crawler such as OAI-SearchBot keeps your pages out of that tool's search answers. Blocking a training crawler such as GPTBot is a separate choice that OpenAI says does not affect ChatGPT search visibility in the same way.
