Facebook & Instagram Ads for Service Businesses

Where do Facebook ads for service businesses fit?

Search ads catch people who already know they need you: someone types emergency AC repair or roof leak repair and picks a company. Meta Ads work differently. They show ads to people in your area while they scroll Facebook, Instagram and Messenger, whether or not they are looking for a contractor that day.

That makes Meta useful for a few jobs in a service business:

    • Planned, visual projects where people browse for ideas first, such as kitchen and bath remodels, outdoor living, flooring or painting.
    • Recurring services where a reminder triggers the purchase, such as cleaning, maintenance plans or seasonal tune-ups.
    • Retargeting people who visited your website or watched your videos but did not call.
    • Building recognition in a new city or service area, so that people already know your name when they search.

    Where it is weaker

For urgent, search-driven jobs such as a burst pipe, a lockout or a broken AC in July, people usually go straight to Google. Meta can support those businesses with retargeting and maintenance offers, but it rarely replaces search.

Which campaigns should a service business run?

Most service businesses need only two or three campaign types. Keep the account simple until the numbers are clear.

    Lead campaigns with instant forms

Meta lead ads open a form inside Facebook or Instagram, often pre-filled with the person's name, email and phone from their profile. The person never leaves the app, which makes it easy to ask for an estimate. That ease cuts both ways: you get more leads, and more of them are people who tapped without much thought.

    Message campaigns

Ads can open a conversation in Messenger, Instagram Direct or WhatsApp. This suits businesses that quote from photos, like movers, cleaners or junk removal, and owners who prefer to talk before scheduling. It only works if someone replies quickly.

    Website traffic or conversion campaigns

These send people to a landing page on your site. They need the Meta Pixel and, ideally, the Conversions API installed so Meta can see which visits turned into forms or calls. They give you more control over the message and usually better-qualified leads than instant forms, at the cost of more friction.

    Retargeting

Show ads to people who already visited your site, engaged with your page or watched your videos. Audiences in a local service area are small, so keep the message fresh and the budget modest.

How do you get better leads from Meta lead ads?

The most common complaint about Meta lead ads is low quality: wrong numbers, people who do not remember filling out the form, or people outside the service area. Several settings and habits help.

    • Use a form type that adds a review or confirmation step, if your volume can afford fewer but better leads.
    • Add one or two qualifying questions, such as ZIP code, type of project or timeline. Each question lowers volume and raises intent.
    • State what happens next and any minimum job size in the form intro.
    • Connect the form to your CRM or an automation so the lead gets a text or call within minutes.
    • Mark which leads became estimates and jobs, and send that data back to Meta so the system can optimize for quality, not just volume.

What makes good Instagram ads for a local business?

Ads on Instagram and Facebook compete with posts from friends and creators. Polished stock photos tend to blend in; real work tends to stand out.

    • Before-and-after photos of real jobs, shot on a phone in good light.
    • Short vertical videos of the crew at work, a walkthrough of a finished project or the owner explaining one tip.
    • A clear line about who it is for: homeowners in a named city or area.
    • One offer or next step per ad, such as a free estimate or a seasonal check.
    • Customer reviews shown as text on the image, with permission and without editing the words.

How should you track Facebook ads for contractors?

Meta reports leads, but it cannot see what happened after. If you only look at cost per lead inside Ads Manager, the campaign that brings the most junk can look like the best one.

Meta's Conversions API lets you send events from your server or CRM to Meta, in addition to the Pixel in the browser. Meta says those server events are processed much like Pixel events and can be used for measurement and optimization. For a contractor, the most valuable events are often offline: estimate booked, job sold.

    • Track forms and calls from your landing pages with the Pixel and the Conversions API.
    • Tag every Meta lead in your CRM with its campaign.
    • Review cost per estimate and cost per sold job each month, not only cost per lead.
    • Compare against your Google Ads and Local Services numbers in the same period.

How much should you spend to start?

We do not quote a standard figure, because the right amount depends on your area, your offer and your job value. A useful starting point is the same math we use for Google Ads: how many jobs you want, what you can afford to pay per job, and your close rate on leads. Then give the campaign enough budget to produce a meaningful number of leads in a few weeks.

Expect Meta leads to close at a different rate than search leads. Run the numbers on your own data before you compare channels.

    Frequently asked questions

Are Facebook ads worth it for contractors?

They can be for planned, visual projects and for retargeting people who already visited your site. They are usually weaker for emergency jobs, where people search on Google instead. The test is cost per sold job compared with your other channels.

Should I use instant forms or send people to my website?

Instant forms usually bring more leads at a lower cost, with more low-intent ones. A landing page adds friction but often brings better-qualified leads. Many accounts test both and keep what produces more jobs.

Can I run Instagram ads without posting on Instagram?

Yes. Ads are run from Meta Ads Manager and can appear on Instagram even if you post rarely. An active profile with real work helps, because people often check it before contacting you.

Why are my Meta leads low quality?

Common causes are forms with no qualifying questions, broad targeting, slow follow-up and optimizing only for lead volume. Adding a question or two, replying within minutes and sending lead quality back to Meta usually help.

Do I need the Meta Pixel?

If you send people to your website, yes. The Pixel and the Conversions API let Meta see which visits turn into leads, which is what it needs to optimize and to report accurately.
